Ransomware attacks have come to greater notoriety in recent times. The DarkSide incident, in particular, compromised a US-based critical infrastructure, causing a widespread disruption to its services, and lives of many. This has reportedly gained the perpetrators a huge amount of payout. Other prominent ransomware attacks in 2021 included attacks on AXA Insurance that was reported in May 2021, and Kaseya in July 2021.

Ransomware perpetrators are also evolving their tactics, techniques and procedures in their cyber operations. These include the Ransomware-as-a-Service model, and double extortion approach used by cyber criminals, which results in increased success rates that puts organisations at greater risk.
