USB Killer Device Destroys University Computers

A former student of a university in New York, US, destroyed more than 60 computers by using a USB killer that would physically damage the computers' electrical system. USB Killer devices work by rapidly charging thumb drive capacitors from the USB power supply, and then discharging the electrical current back into the USB slot, thereby destroying the host device by overloading the USB data port. The suspect has purchased the USB Killer from the Internet and physically accessed multiple computer workrooms in the campus to plug the USB Killer into unprotected USB ports. More than US$50,000 worth of equipment were destroyed in the incident.
