State-sponsored Hackers Steal Technology Developed for Military Use
EDUCATION INDUSTRY

Chinese hackers have targeted at least 27 universities in the US, Canada and Southeast Asia since 2017 to steal research about maritime technology developed for military use. The group known as Temp.Periscope (aka Leviathan or Mudcarp), will pose as journalists or the US Navy to phish targeted academics. When successful, they pivot from the initial compromise by leveraging on trust relationships to spear phish connected defence contractors and research institutions. The cyber espionage campaign is believed to be sponsored by the Chinese government, which seeks to match US weapon capabilities and gain insights about the US government plans in the Asia Pacific region.
