Shipping Industry’s Cybersecurity Guide Discloses Past Attacks

The latest edition of a cybersecurity guide published by a conglomerate of 21 international shipping associations and industry groups disclosed several previously unknown cyberattacks that happened on ships and ports. One of the attacks was a virus infection of the Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) that ships use for sailing. The virus was quarantined and the ECDIS computers restored, but the source of infection remains unknown. In one case of ransomware infection after a ship agent clicked a malicious attachment, a ship owner paid the ransom. Another case of ransomware infection occurred on the main application server of a ship because of poor password security.
