School Networks Face Increased Cyber Threats

Schools in New Zealand have reported a surge in cyber attacks that aim to take down school websites through distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. The attacks were apparently conducted by disgruntled students and usually peaked during the start and end of the school year. These attacks may cause intermittent connections to the school portal such that students and staff are not able to access essential online services. Another security challenge in school network is the frequent connections of bring your own devices (BYOD). These devices may not be actively maintained and a malware infected BYOD has the potential to spread internally. System administrators can consider setting up a network for BYOD connections separated from school-owned devices and servers to mitigate against lateral infections. For network access control, consider implementing digital certificates to authenticate and assign user rights for connection to the school network.
