Ransomware Wipes Out Database at Email Service Provider

An anonymous email service provider, VFEmail, suffered a ransomware attack that wiped out 18 years' worth of customer emails, including data held in backup servers. The attack started at VFEmail's US-based servers, where the hackers destroyed every virtual machine deployed, and formatted all the disks on every server. The hackers then attempted to destroy the company's servers in the Netherlands, but was deterred and affected data were recovered from backups. The attackers' aim remained unclear as VFEmail did not receive any ransom demand and the affected data did not seem to be exfiltrated before the ransomware attack. VFEmail is working to restore all services but it is unlikely affected emails will be recovered.
