Most Hotel Websites Leak Guest Booking Data to Third-Parties

A recent study discovered that most hotel websites leaked customers' personal data when sharing hotel booking information with advertisers and analytics companies. The study polled over 1,500 hotels in 54 countries and found that 67% exposed some form of personal information such as name, email, phone number, redacted payment card details, and passport number. The personal data are leaked through the sharing of reservation details via a direct link that does not require logging in. It is estimated that each booking generates an average of 176 referrals to third-party services. The booking data are observed to be available online even after the hotel reservation is cancelled.
