Hackers Steal Sensitive Data from Hospitals' Email Systems

The University of Connecticut Health Center recently suffered a breach that affected some 326,000 people. The threat actor was able to access billing and medical information as well as personally identifiable information such as names, dates of birth and social security numbers after compromising several employee email accounts. In a separate incident at the Rutland Regional Medical Center in Vermont, several employee email accounts were also compromised and information pertaining to 72,000 patients were stolen. In 2018, healthcare organisations in the US reported 290 breaches, which affected an estimated 11.5 million people. Majority of the breaches were due to hacking and IT incidents (45.9%) followed by unauthorised access and disclosure (35.9%).
