Emotet Trojan - Most Prevalent Threat in Healthcare Systems

A study reveals that nearly 80% of malware affecting computer systems in the healthcare industry are trojans and the most common of them is Emotet. Emotet started out as a banking trojan to steal credentials but has become a competent malware loader due to its modular nature, which allows for added functions when required. The malware is typically spread via phishing emails that use social engineering to persuade victims into launching a malicious file. After gaining a foothold, the attacker can load relevant modules to harvest email addresses for perpetuating spam campaign and spread within the local network by abusing the SMB protocol.
