Compromised Banks Used as Starting Points for Phishing Attacks

Cybercriminals who have gained a foothold in banks and financial institutions are likely to carry out attacks beyond its initial targets by leveraging on the victim's infrastructure for social engineering. The hackers will fully maximise unauthorised access by using the compromised email system for phishing attacks, leading to infections in partner organisations. Such attacks have a higher chance of infection since the emails originate from a partner organisation and therefore a trusted source. Such attacks can perpetuate to a cross-border domino-effect where infections are spread to financial organisations in other countries.
